Keys to Keeping a Healthy Teeth and Gums
Brushing
Brush at least twice a day
Choose a soft toothbrush – it is easier on gums and doesn’t damage the surface of your teeth
Choose a toothpaste with fluoride
Use gentle pressure – don’t press too hard!
Use small circular motions
Start on one side of your mouth and move to the other – brush every surface of every tooth!
Replace your toothbrush often – If you would be embarrassed to show your dentist your toothbrush, it is time for a new one!
Flossing
Floss your teeth once a day
Remove about 18 inches of floss from your dispenser
Wrap the floss around each of your middle fingers
Use your index finger to push the floss between your teeth
Be gentle when pulling floss down between teeth to avoid damaging gums
Slide floss along each curve of each tooth
Be sure to floss between each tooth and also behind back teeth
Floss holders are good alternatives for children or those with difficulty flossing
Rinsing
Antibacterial mouth rinse can reduce bacteria in your mouth
Fluoride mouth rinse helps reduce and prevent tooth decay
Rinse after brushing your teeth
Try not to eat or drink for at least 30 minutes after rinsing
Do not use fluoride mouth rinse for children under 6
Eating Right
Eat a balanced diet
Try to avoid sugary foods like candy, cookies, cakes, and pies
Also eat a limited amount of dried fruits and raisins
Hard candies are especially harmful because they stay in your mouth a long time
Avoid starchy snack foods like chips and crackers, which stick to your teeth
